IBRE's Economic Development does research in applied economics related to economic development. For instance, the area constructs indicators for the development of human capital in Brazil and maintains historical series of work hours and aggregate productivity in Brazil and other countries.

Typical Economic Development studies are those on of deindustrialization and Dutch disease in Brazil, educational management, long-term structural changes in the Brazilian economy, and changes in the services sector.
Economic Development is also focused on short-term macroeconomics and coordinates quarterly meetings on current economic events, and works with other IBRE’s research areas on a model for constructing short- and medium-term macroeconomic scenarios that can also be extended to make long-term projections.
