Consumer Price Index - Class 1

The Consumer Price Index - Class 1 (CPI-C1) measures the variation in cost of living for families with income between 1 and 2.5 monthly minimum wages.

Inflation is not perceived in the same way for all families. Each family has its own consumption profile guided by its income, its composition (number of individuals and their ages), and its preferences. Families with lower income dedicate a larger share of their expenditure to food and basic items for their upkeep, while higher-income families spend larger shares of their budgets on education, health, and leisure activities.

Family Budget Surveys (FBS) provide detailed information on the consumption structures of a broad spectrum of households. Based on the results calculated in this type of survey, it is possible to estimate the variation in cost of living for families with different levels of income, for example.

Based on the data generated by IBGE’s last FBS, carried out in 2017/2018, it was possible to calculate the CPI in relation to families with a monthly income between 1 and 2.5 minimum wages.

The relevance of the index, calculated since 2004, lies in detecting differences between the mean inflation rate for the population as a whole and the rate for families with lower spending power.
